Breakwater's Purple Ombre Cake Pheno Hunt

Breakwater Pheno Hunt

What is a Pheno Hunt?

Short for “Phenotype Hunt,” this is the search for the best possible version of a strain. When we acquire seeds of a compelling strain, we grow multiple plants to maturity. Each plant is a unique physical expression or phenotype of its genetic makeup (just like children from the same parents can be quite different). We evaluate each phenotype for traits such as flower size, plant structure, aromas, effects, and potency. In a successful Pheno Hunt, the most promising candidate will become a mother plant for a new strain of Breakwater Premium Flower.

Our first official Breakwater Pheno Hunt began on December 12th, 2022. After growing a multitude of plants from seed and eliminating obvious non-contenders, our cultivators have narrowed this hunt to Purple Ombre Cake #37 and Purple Ombre Cake #42. We’re now inviting you to weigh in on which is the better fit for our patients! Purple Ombre Cake, bred by Boston Roots Seeds Co., is a cross between recent Breakwater Small Batch favorite Wedding Cake and a (Sunset Sherbet x Headbanger) male.

PURPLE OMBRE CAKE #42
WEDDING CAKE x (SUNSET SHERBET x HEADBANGER)

While #37 is a green flower with a heavy dose of trichomes, #42 has a little more color to it. Thick, dense buds are shaded dark green and deep purple, with a dose of amber stigmas and ample trichome coverage. Its quick growth rate provides the support necessary for the chunky flowers it produces. The scent is alluring and has some parallels to its Sunset Sherbet lineage. Dark berry, sweet cake, and fuel compliment the Sherb characteristics.

WEDDING CAKE x (SUNSET SHERBET x HEADBANGER)

The greener of the two plants, #37 is the gassier phenotype as well – a nod to its Headbanger lineage. This fast-growing plant is a treat to cultivate, producing plentiful flower growth sites. As the flowers develop, trichomes generously cover them, making its green hue hard to see. Aromas of fuel fill the air as the flowers mature, followed by secondary smells of lemon and grape candy.
